Dialysis: Types, How It Works, Procedure

Dialysis

Dialysis is a crucial medical treatment for individuals whose kidneys are no longer able to perform their necessary functions, like filtering waste products and excess fluid from the blood. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with kidney disease, understanding dialysis, its types, how it works, and Procedure is essential. At SSD Hospital, we aim to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of dialysis treatment options, ensuring that you feel informed and supported throughout your healthcare journey.

What is Dialysis?

Dialysis is a medical procedure that replicates the kidney’s function when they fail. It involves filtering waste products, extra fluids, and toxins from the blood, keeping essential electrolytes balanced. Dialysis is used when a person’s kidneys cannot perform this function due to kidney failure or severe kidney damage.

Types of Dialysis:

  1. Hemodialysis: This is the most common form of dialysis. During hemodialysis, the blood is drawn out of the body through a special machine called a dialyzer. The dialyzer filters the blood and removes waste products before it is returned to the body. Typically performed at a healthcare facility, hemodialysis requires patients to visit the hospital several times a week for the procedure.

  2. Peritoneal Dialysis: In this type of dialysis, the lining of the abdomen (the peritoneum) acts as a filter for the blood. A special solution is infused into the abdominal cavity through a catheter, where it absorbs waste products from the blood vessels in the peritoneum. After a set period, the solution, along with the waste, is drained out. Peritoneal dialysis can be done at home and offers more flexibility in terms of scheduling.

How Does Dialysis Work?

Dialysis works by removing excess waste and fluid from the bloodstream when the kidneys are no longer able to perform this function. During hemodialysis, blood is drawn from the body, filtered through a dialyzer, and then returned. In peritoneal dialysis, a special fluid is introduced into the abdominal cavity where it absorbs waste products before being drained out. Both procedures require careful monitoring and regular treatments to maintain the health of the patient.

Dialysis Procedure:

  1. Preparation: Before dialysis begins, a patient may need a vascular access site. For hemodialysis, this is typically done by surgically creating a fistula or graft in the arm to allow easy access to the bloodstream. Peritoneal dialysis requires the insertion of a catheter into the abdomen.

  2. Dialysis Treatment: The patient undergoes either hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis based on their treatment plan. Hemodialysis sessions last between 3 to 5 hours, typically occurring 3 times per week. Peritoneal dialysis is done daily at home.

  3. Post-Treatment Care: After dialysis, the patient will be monitored for any complications. Following a successful treatment, patients are advised to follow specific instructions for maintaining their vascular access or catheter site to reduce the risk of infection.
